Easier Payroll Set Up With Version 2006

Payroll Tax Service

With version 2006 as in previous versions, the first step is to choose the payroll tax table service option.  There are three alternatives:

  • Standard (tax tables and ability to print federal forms) Cost is $199/annually
  • Enhanced (this service was new with version 2005 and includes tax tables, federal forms, workers comp calculations and state forms)  Cost is $299/annually
    • It is possible to bundle this service with the next version of QuickBooks Pro software as part of the annual subscription price. Cost increases by $100/annually for a total of $399/annually
    • It is possible to bundle this service with the next version of QuickBooks Premier as part of the annual subscription price. Cost increases by $200/annually for a total of $499/annually
    • There is also a service called Enhanced Plus for Accountants which permits adding 50 tax id numbers to one subscription for clients that the accountant processes in their office. There is no additional cost for this option so the $299/annually price will apply.
    • Assisted (enter and print paychecks then payroll service accepts responsibility) Cost is from $59/month

New Payroll Set Up

The set up process has been re-designed with version 2006 to provide improved step by step instructions and guidance to QuickBooks users.  Included is context-sensitive help, a new employee summary screen.  The payroll check up as in previous versions is also utilized to help ensure everything has been completed and to reduce the likelihood that errors have been made.

The steps include:

  • Introduction
  • Company Setup
  • Employee Setup
  • Taxes
  • Payroll History
  • Payroll Check Up
  • Finishing Up

For experienced users, this is a big change from the way that we would typically sign up for the payroll service then dive right into setting up payroll items.  Due to changes in the system, it is recommended that the Payroll Set Up wizard be reviewed at a minimum, and used for a new set up.  Once the items have been set up through the wizard, it is then possible to edit the Payroll Items as in previous versions.
